How Thick Should Your Driveway Base Really Be?
When someone asks us to fix a driveway that keeps rutting or washing out, the problem is almost never the gravel you can see. It is what sits underneath, or what is missing underneath. So the real question is not how much rock to spread on top. It is how deep the base needs to go for your ground and the vehicles that use it.
Here is how we think about it.
A driveway is layers, not one load of rock
A driveway that lasts is built in layers. At the bottom is the subgrade, which is just your native ground once we have stripped the sod and organic material off it. On top of that goes a sub-base, usually a coarse pit run or larger crushed rock that spreads the weight out. The surface layer is a finer crushed rock, the standard use to be 5/8-minus. The state spec is now 3/4-minus, that locks together and sheds water.
Skip the sub-base and lay a thin layer of pretty rock straight onto soft ground, and the rock works its way into the dirt the first wet winter. That is the ruts and potholes people call us about.
Depth depends on your ground and your traffic
There is no single right number, and anyone who gives you one without seeing the site is guessing.
For a firm subgrade and normal car and pickup traffic, a few inches of well compacted crushed rock over a proper sub-base can be enough. Soft, wet ground, the kind we see in the river bottoms around Kelso and Longview, needs more: a deeper sub-base, and sometimes a Road fabric layer between the dirt and the rock to keep the two from mixing. A driveway that has to carry loaded delivery trucks, an RV, or concrete trucks during a build needs more still.
The firmer volcanic ground up around Castle Rock behaves differently than the alluvial soil down by the water. Same driveway on paper, different section in the ground. That is why we look at the soil before we quote the rock.
Compaction is half the job
Depth only works if the rock is compacted in lifts as it goes down, not dumped and bladed out in one pass. Loose rock keeps settling under traffic, and that is what opens up the low spots that hold water. Water is what wrecks a driveway. Build it deep enough, compact it right, and crown it so water runs off instead of pooling, and it stays where you put it.
Preventive Driving
One simple way to help your driveway last longer is to change where you drive on it. If you always follow the same tire tracks, those spots take all the weight and can start forming ruts. When it is safe to do so, drive slightly to either side of those tracks to spread the wear across more of the driveway. Using more of the full driveway width also helps keep grass and weeds from creeping in along the edges. It is a small habit, but it can help prevent minor wear from turning into a bigger repair.
